Hopefully doing this would reinforce that the "genre stuff" they learn in 1020 does have some application outside of that specific class (although an intermediate composition course might be the next place you'd expect it anyway). But I think a focus on genre could help students better understand not just the poetry itself, but also the concerns of the cultures they are encountering through the poetry (for example, what subject-patterns do we see in Petrarchan sonnets? Why might this be?) This is all just initial brainstorming since I've only been thinking about it the past day or so, but I'm excited to start planning this semester. This timing for this course really couldn't have worked out better for me.
